Alex Atkins has all the qualities of a good mystery man. He’s tall, dark and handsome. He’s also the hot dog vender Eddy met at the Gate on September 17, 2001. With Eddy established as the Warrior, Alex immediately wrangled a job training police, fire and other emergency personnel in martial arts, self-defense and hand-to-hand combat. The job allowed him and Eddy to have a relationship that seemed ordinary. Alex keeps his true identity hidden from everyone but Eddy who knows that Alex comes from the world on the other side of the Gate. His job on this side of the Gate is that of Gatekeeper and sidekick to the Warrior.
Alex has been a Gatekeeper in other places and at other times. He admires Eddy for his courage, his dedication, and his self-sacrifice. He never worked with a warrior who cared so much about his family, that he separated from them in order to protect them. He also admires Eddy’s ethics when dealing with creatures from Alex’s world, though he does question his decisions at times.
Like all the creatures that end up dwelling in our world, Eddy has power over Alex. Alex knows that Eddy would risk his life for Alex, but he also knows that Eddy would not hesitate to destroy him if he thought Alex were a danger to this world. This knowledge keeps them from forming the kind of friendship partners usually form.
